Samyang 85mm 1.4 – A good choice for your Sony A7 camera! REVIEW

This blogpost is about the Samyang 85mm 1.4 lens which you can get as E-Mount fullframe lens for your A7 series camera for a very affordable price. Samyang is a well known brand but their lenses are also being sold under the brands of Rokinon, Walimex…but basicly its all Samyang.

An 85mm lens is perfect for portraits and basicly for everything when you want bokeh and this lens delivers this, the out of focus is very smooth and creamy. The Sharpness is very good from F 1.8,  i mostly used it on F 2.0 where the sharpness is perfect and you still get a lot of bokeh. On 1.4 i found it to be quite soft and CA´s are more present, but can be corrected in LR.

The weight and size is ok on the A7II, its about 560 gramms, i used it for several hours without any problems. The builtquality is very solid.

Now this Samyang is only a manual focus lens, but its very easy to focus on the A7II, just use the focus magnifier and the focus peaking. The focusring is quite smooth to turn and precise. The IBIS works very good also with this 85mm lens.

Now lets see some images i made with the Samyang 85mm + Sony A7II:

You can get this lens for only about 350€ which is allmost 3,5x less! than the FE Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8 which is 1.200€. Now of course the Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8 is another league and you get autofocus and the Zeiss look, but when you want to save some money and you don´t need autofocus, this Samyang 85mm is a gem and it would also be a great lens on a crop camera like the Sony A6000  where you get 135mm!

This lens is also very good on Video, here are 2 testvideos i shot with it:
