Fuji XT2 Firmware 4.0 REVIEW

In this video i´m taking a close look at Fujis latest firmware upgrade 4.0 for the Fuji XT2.

If you know Fuji and their update philosophy then you know that this is not just a simple update, what you get here in this 4.0 Kaizen upgrade are completely new features. That´s something you simply don’t get with any other brands, maybe Panasonic and the GH5, but then its over.

The most important features for me are that Fuji now included internal FLOG and 120P Slow motion for fuji XT2 users and further improved lowlight focusing and AF-C speed, which is more than remarkable because Fujis new XH1 has these features already, but Fuji is not holding back the good stuff and now you also have this in your 2 year old XT2.

I really think that quite a lot of people still don´t understand why buying a Fuji system is an investment in the future.  Fuji is not throwing camera bodys like crazy on the market like Sony and others do for example, but instead you will have support and feature upgrades for your existing “old” camera for years to come!

So thank you Fuji for your amazing support, that’s exactly why I love this brand and I will continue to buy Fuji products.

  • 1.Addition of “Focus Bracketing”
The update will enable the photographer to shoot focus distance bracketing up to 999 frames. When the photographer starts shooting, the focal location is shifted with each activation of the shutter by the step of focus shift set from 1 to 10.
  • 2.Compatible with the newly developed cinema lens FUJINON MKX18-55mmT2.9 lens and FUJINON MKX50-135mmT2.9 lens
The upgrade will add compatibility for the newly developed FUJINON MKX18-55mmT2.9 lens and FUJINON MKX50-135mmT2.9 lens
    1) Aperture information can be displayed on the monitor. The upgrade allows users to select T-stop or F-stop.
    2) The upgrade allows users to check the focus distance with the distance indicator shown on the monitor.
    3) Automatically corrects the distortion and the color/brightness shading.
    4) Camera automatically calculate the White Balance based on the lens position and deliver the color expressions with Film Simulation modes.
  • 3.Enlarged and customizable indicators or information
The upgrade allows users to enlarge indicators and information in the viewfinder and/or LCD monitor. This upgrade will also enable users to customize the location of where the information is shown on the display.
  • 4.Addition of F-log SD card recording
The upgrade allows users to record F-log movie data into their SD card.
  • 5.Addition of 1080/120P high-speed video mode
The upgrade allows users to shoot 1080/120P high-speed video (1/2, 1/4 and 1/5 speed slow motion), ideal for recording spectacular slow-motion footage.
  • 6.Enhanced Phase Detection AF
Latest updates to the AF algorithm provide the following performance enhancements :
    1) The low-light limit for phase detection autofocus has been improved by approximately 1.5 stops from 0.5EV to -1.0EV, raising the precision and speed of autofocus in low-light environments.
    2) The range at minimum aperture has been expanded from F8 to F11. For example, even when using the XF100-400mmF4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR with the tele converter XF2X TC WR, phase detection autofocus can now be used.
    3) Major improvements have been made to the AF-C performance while operating the zoom, which provides major benefits when shooting sports and other scenarios in which the subjects moves unpredictably.
    4) Finely-detailed surface textures of wild birds and wild animals can now be captured at high speed and with high precision as a result of improvement in phase detection autofocus.
  • 7.Addition of “Flicker Reduction”
For enhancing the quality of indoor sports photography, the upgrade allows users to reduce flicker in pictures and the display when shooting under fluorescent lighting and other similar light sources.
  • 8.Addition of “Select Folder” and “Create Folder”
Enables the user to choose the folder in which subsequent pictures will be stored. And also enable to enter a five-character folder name to create a new folder in which to store subsequent pictures.
  • 9.New functions are added to store and read of camera settings by FUJIFILM X Acquire
Once connecting a camera to a computer via USB cable, the “FUJIFILM X Acquire” allows users to backup/restore camera settings to/from a file. With “FUJIFILM X Acquire” (ver.1.7 or newer), CUSTOM REGISTRATION/EDIT settings are also stored and read.

To test  the firmware for this video I used the Fujinon 50-140 2.8 and my AF-C setting was ignore obstacles and continue to track subjects.

In my YouTube video you can see how good the video AF-C is performing now, my little girl is running quite fast, but the XT2´s focusing system was working perfectly here.

And the video AF-C is even more impressive in the scene where my little girl is running in my direction. Capturing something like that is very difficult for the focusing system of any camera and lens combination, but here it worked just perfectly.+

Here are my video settings:

Keep in mind when you shoot FLOG your base ISO will bump up to 800, so this means in bright daylight you will have to use an ND or variable ND Filter if you want to use 2x the shutterspeed of 24frames for example. If you don´t have a ND filter with you, you can also set the shutterspeed to something like 8000 of a second to shoot at F2.8 with FLOG.

You can also see in my video how quickly the focus is following some cyclists even behind some trees and I think the time when it fails to focus and refocuses is shorter now after the 4.0 update.

Also in this video: slowmotion goodness coverd in Fujis beautifull Eterna film simulation. Yes you can also have Fujis Eterna film simulation from the XH1 with your XT2 video files. I already showed you in one of my videos how you can get eterna without Fuji FLOG by making the files very flat and then adding Fujis own Eterna LUT on top, but now you can just record your Fuji FLOG and then put the eterna lut on your files in Davinci Resolve for example. Get the Eterna LUT HERE

Now how good is the slowmotion, I think for only 1080P it looks very good, sometimes you can see some moire but that’s really not a big issue.

So basicly software wise now you have everything usefull what the Fuji XH1  has in the XT2 except of the higher bitrate, the XH1 records 200mps video files and the xt2 unfortunately only 100mbps. In my opinion it´s only a matter of time that Fuji XT2 users will also get 200mbps bitrate video recording. The Samsung NX500 Mod already showed that the bitrate can be upgraded very easily. That Mod-HACK video is also on my  YouTube channel.

But this upgrade throws one big question into the room, why should you buy a Fuji XH1 now? Well basicly it’s the IBIS and the better grip what makes the difference.

My recommendation if you are thinking about buying the XT2 or the XH1 is, first of all wait for the release of the Fuji XT-3. The XT-3 will be announced very soon and then prices for the XT-2 will drop, if you want the best bang for the buck get the XT-2.

Only get the X-H1  if you totally want IBIS, in my opinion Fuji made quite a mistake with this camera, they should have made the XH-1 similar to the GH5s with dual ISO but with the advantage of the APSC sensor size and with even more video orientaded features like 10 bit, 4k 60p and so on.

Nontheless it´s  second to none what Fuji does with their firmware upgrades  and this 4.0 upgrade is by far the best yet for the XT-2.

I also shot some photos using the AF-C  for this video, which worked great, but i will test that a lot more at  a sports event pretty soon.

There are even more features like focus stacking, flicker reduction… the XT-2 got with this upgrade but I will show you all that in my upcoming vidoes and blogposts.
