Sony FE 50mm 1.8 First Impressions

Yesterday i received a small package from Amazon, a sweet little lens was in there, the Sony FE 50mm 1.8 🙂

I will not bore you with an unboxing video, but here is just a quick first impression hands on the new Sony FE 50mm 1.8 with a few sample images. My full review is coming soon, i just have to spend more time with this new lens.

First of all the buildquality of this lens is really nicely made, it looks and feels quite solid with quality plastics and a metal mount, allthough not as solid as my Sigma 24mm 1.4 for example , but you can´t really expect that for an affordable price of 300€ or 248 $ in the US.

The good news is this lens is really small, for a fast aperture of 1.8 i think the size is really good, the lens with the camera on fits into my very small Streetomatic streetshooter bag, which is great for streetshooting! If you haven´t allready, please check out my review for this bag here:

Camslinger Streetomatic Bag REVIEW

As you can see on my pictures the lens fits the Sony very well and since it is so lightweight , 186 g only,  it balances just great on the A7II. So all in all no complaints on the buildquality here, the lens does not feel cheap or that it will break.

The FE 50mm 1.8 has no buttons on it, but it has a very nice focus ring which is very smooth to turn. This lens also comes with a lenshood which is also made out of plastic.

How good is the image quality? I need to spend more time with this lens and you can read my full review soon, but i can allready tell you that this lens is a very good performer, it is allready very useable sharp at 1.8 and stopped down to 2.0 or 2.8 it gets even sharper. After reading some of the previews for this lens i was affraid that chromatic aberrations, mangenta and purple fringing would be a big problem on this lens, but after i have looked at my first shots in lightroom, i must say the results are really nice and of course there is some mangenta and purple fringing also when you shoot portraits, but thats nothing that can´t be solved with a few clicks. So you will get very nice results.

Update: here are some more images i made today outside, and wow really did not expect that kind of image quality and detail, also really beautiful bokeh and even some 3d pop on some images, so image quality is excellent. These are all just edited with basic settings in lightroom. This lens even has a kind of unique warm look, very nice:

How is the autofocus? Well, unfortunately this is not a strength of this lens. First the autofocus is loud and it looks like there is a slow motor built in, so you will not get a silent and fast SSM lens here. It also looks like this lens will  need a firmware update because it focuses back and forth till it gets the focus everytime and thats really not what you would expect from a native FE lens.

Of course you could argue you get what you pay, but to be honest it is a bit disappointing if you compare this Sony 50 1.8 for example to the Nikon 50 1.8G which is a very good and fast lens and costs even less then the Sony for only about 216$ or less. There are definetly faster Sony FE lenses out there.

One thing i really like about this FE lens though or any FE lens is that you get the face AF with face registration, this + the tilting screen is just great for portraits, especially when you take pictures of small kids.

Here are some shots i made with the Nikon D800 + Nikon 50 1.8G years ago:
