I want to say that I always give my honest opinion about the gear i´m using and so it is with my Fuji gear and whatever gear i´m reviewing. Some pople commented that Fuji cameras are only good for streetphotography and people shots allthough they watched my X-T2 review. I think this is complete nonsense and want to start showing you again why the X-T2 is capable of shooting anything and I will start with this review of the fujinon 50-140 2.8.

BUILD QUALITY & DESIGN
The Fujinon lens is very well balanced and is build like a tank with 5 ED elements + 1 super ED element, Nano GI and HT-EBC lens coatings for control over chromatic aberrations, ghosting and flares.
It also has 7 rounded aperture blades for very smooth bokeh.
With this fujinon lens you also have 2o distinct weather seals across the barrel for dust and moisture sealing and you can use it in low temperatures as 14 degree fahrenheit / -10 centigrade.
The weight is good too for a 2.8 lens, with 995 gramms it weighs less than the Fullframe Sony 70-200 2.8 Gmaster for example which is a very heavy beast with 1480 gramms.
The buildquality of this fujinon lens is excellent and so is the tripod collar that comes with it, you can rotate the collar and fix it to the position you want it to be and you can also completely take the collar off if you want. Just loosen the 2 screws on the collar until it comes off, the screws are fixed in the collar so you are not going to loose them.
Here is a comparison with the fullframe canon 70-200 f4 L lens which I used on my sony a7ii, as you can see the size is pretty similar, but of course the fujinon is thicker, but for a 2.8 lens it still has a quite compact size.
The fujinon has only 1 switch on the lens to turn the ois on and off, so it’s a very minimalistic design. It has no focus limiter switch or a switch for different panning modes, but I must say that during my test I did not miss that at all.
When you have a fujinon lens with ois attached to the xt2 you can choose from 2 different stabilization modes. Mode 1 is always turned on by default and with this setting the lens stabilization is always working. Mode 2 is active when you press the shutter or back focus button in continues AF for example, so this setting could help save some battery life probably. During the time I have this lens now I always kept it on mode 1 though.
But how good is the stabilization working since the xt-2 has no inbody stabilization?
I was very impressed how strong the OIS in this lens is working!
Here are some example photos I shot handheld using with the booster grip on the xt2 with a shutterspeed of only 1/60 sec and F8 with 50mm and the same with 140mm handheld. You could probably even go a bit lower with the shutterspeed without using the booster grip, because the weight will be reduced.
The fujinon has a clicky aperture ring on it, which you can´t declick unfortunately for video, but maybe in the next version of this lens. You can also set the lens to automatic mode directly on the aperture ring which is nice to have.
The focal ring is very grippy and large and also very smooth to turn to quickly change your focal length, but still has enough resistance, so that you will not change it accidently.
This lens does not extend when you change the focal length, its lenght is always the same which is great. The manual focus ring is about the same but has a bit more resistance I woud say.
The lens comes with a nice fuji lenscap which you can quickly put on and off. The filtersize of this lens is 72mm if you want to screw your filters on and on the lenshood you can take a bit of the plastic off to rotate your filter and then put the plastic in the lenshood back (forgott that in the video review)
Now that’s all nice but how good is focusing with this lens?
Focusing with this lens even at 140mm and low window light only is very fast on the fuji xt2 + booster grip. Once the lens focuses on the contrasty parts its just great, now the lens is a bit slower on not so contrasty parts and can even hunt a bit in lowlight from time to time, but you will have that with any mirrorless camera, regardless if its Sony, Fuji or whatever. But as I said as soon as you focus on the contrasty parts, the Fuji XT-2 focusing is just great and fast how it should be and in daylight and outside you will not have any problem at all focusing.

IMAGE QUALITY & BOKEH WITH SINGLE AF
Now how good is the image quality and bokeh? First – before I say something about that I also want to say that some people still think that you can´t get that much bokeh with an aps-c lens and some even think that a 2.8 lens on aps-c is not a true 2.8 and so on. My answer to this is , really forget about all that crap and watch my sample images. Here are some of my first examples I shot with the 50-140 2.8, pretty much everything is shot at 2.8 and as you can see you get beautifull blown out backgrounds and the sharpness at 2.8 and detail you get is outstanding for a telezoom lens.
All of these images are processed with simple editing using the Fuji raw files, adding the Fuji colorprofiles such as velvia, provia, classic chrome and acros in post, depending on the images. The velvia profile for example fits great for nature shots, autumn shots and so on, while I love the classic chrome profile for portraits for example, so you do have a lot of choice using a Fuji camera and you also have that with a simple press of a button selecting your profile for jpegs too. And that is a huge advantage which you simply don´t have on other camera brands.
As far as the optical quality of this lens goes i honestly do think that this Fujinon 50-140 is a master piece of engineering, I could not find any optical flaws. At 2.8 there is no colored fringing, vingnetting and distortion is so low that it seems like not present and since it has all the professional coatings it also handles flares very well.
As i said focusing with this lens is great and I didn´t have any problems focusing all of these shots outside also in lowlight. Since this fujinon lens has a fast 2.8 speed you can keep the iso very low I could shoot most of the time with isos about 800 – 1200 max in lowlight. Having such a 50-140mm 2.8 telezoom lens is so much fun, you can shoot at any time and you will get great results, regardless if you are a professional or enthusiast, you would totally love having such a great lens on any camera brand.
On these shots I have tested the bokeh at a christmas market and at home, as you can see the bokeh balls are beautifull round in the middle and they tend to get lemon shaped in the corners, but the bokeh quality itself looks beautifull creamy and you can blow out the background just like you would do with a fullframe lens. Of course bokeh is always a matter of taste, but i really like it.
CONTINUES AF & HIGHSPEED SHOOTING
Now lets test the Fujinon lens on the X-T2 now with continues highspeed shooting and with continues af.
When the xt2 is set to single af you have 325 af points which almost cover the complete sensor and with the af joystick you can move your AF selection where you want it to be, by pressing the AF joytick you can also adjust the AF size with the wheel on the back, so you can quickly change that anytime and you don´t have to go in the menu.
Now if you set the xt2 in continues AF mode then you only have 91 AF points, so this could look like it is a bit limited using only the center part, but you can also choose the size of your AF area and i´m going to show you why this area is enough to work with and get great results.
Now if you switch to the Zone AF then you can even have a bigger af area which you can move with the af joystick
For the first testshots I used the AF-C custom setting 2 which is called ignore obstacles & continue to track subject.
And that´s exactly what the X-T2 does, using the custom setting 2, the X-T2 really follows your subject and really ignors the obstacles like the tree branches in my sample images, even when your subject is already behind the branches like these joggers, which is very impressive!
I also used the setting 2 for my birdshots, all of this is shot at 2.8 with the booster grip handheld. Shooting with a 2.8 lens regardless on which brand is not easy and it definetly needs some practice, so always keep that in mind. But if you do it right and move your camera with the lens in the direction where your subject goes while making shure that your subject is in the center part of the focus area, which you will do automaticly once you have practiced it a lot, then you will have tons of shots which are in focus with the fujinon 50-140 2.8 and the fuji xt2.

MECHANICAL vs. ELECTRONIC SHUTTER
One thing you have too keep in mind is that there are differences using the mechanical shutter and the electronic shutter also with the booster grip
With the mechanical shutter you have 11 fps, which is still more than enough in booster mode, but when you switch it to the electronic shutter you have the full 14 fps in the booster mode.
If you only have 2 batteries like me in the booster grip and one battery runs out than you will only get 8 FPS with the mechanical shutter and the booster mode. So it´s a good idea to take a third battery in the camera with you or replace the empty battery in the grip to keep the weight low.
With the electronic shutter you will still have 14 fps even with 1 battery in the booster mode.
Now you could ask why would you not use the electronic shutter all the time then? Well, like on every other mirrorless camera there are disadvantages to the electronic shutter. Using the E-Shutter with artificial lighting can show flickering in your shots, since the X-T2 has no flicker reduction like the Nikon D500, it´s a better idea to use the mechanical shutter. Using the E-Shutter can also change your bokeh so that it looks not as smooth anymore, regardless on which mirrorless camera. But in daylight for sports you can definetly use the E-Shutter.
LOW LIGHT FOCUSING
AF-C is working really good in lowlight, it is pretty quick and only very little hunting, see my video example above.
To further test the Fujinon 50-140 2.8 on the Fuji X-T2 i was on a great concert in the Brucknerhaus in Linz. Since the Fujinon is a fast 2.8 lens I could again keep the isos pretty low and get some very nice results I think.
I was sitting in the middle of the conert hall, but the 140mm focal length was enough to get pretty close to the artists.
All photos you see here are again just simple editing from the fuji raws and I used the classic chrome profile in post and boosted the dynamic to get more color and still have the classic crome look
As you can see the image quality you get with the Fuji X-T2 and the 50-140 2.8 is just great, I shot everything here with 2.8 again. The sharpness is excellent of this lens and with an amazing camera like the X-T2 you have a dreamteam that can easyily rival fullframe.
VIDEO & AF-C
To further show you how strong the ois in the 50-140 2.8 works I shot some 4k video again using the booster grip and everything handheld. Make shure to watch my Video above. The lens is very stable also in video mode and you can handhold that for a long time even at the longest end of 140mm which is the equiv to about 200mm on a fullframe camera.
You can also get smooth panning shots using the ois handheld, but since the ois is so strong and you don´t have a dedicated OIS mode for video you have to move very, very slow otherwise the OIS will try to compensate. But of course that´s wenn you shoot handheld, you could also just use a tripod for smooth panning shots or a monopod with a fluid tripodhead, which most videographers use anyway.
Since the X-T2 has an AF Joytick, you can also use it in video to quickly select where you want the focus to be, like you would do with a touchscreen, but it feels much more natural using a joystick for this while looking through the evf.

CONCLUSION, RATING & PRICING
The fujinon 50-140 2.8 is just a great lens, you get all the professional coatings and weather sealing in a lens that is build like a tank. I really can´t see any optical flaws and coupled with the fuji x-t2 and the booster grip, you have killer combo for sports too with very good AF.
Now that i have this amazing lens i can honestly say that i would not switch back to fullframe again. There is absolutely nothing you cannot shoot with the X-T2 and Fuji´s lens selection.
From me this lens gets an almost perfect 9 out of 10 and my full recommendation.
This lens is definetly worth its pricing of 1.400 $/€. If you compare this to the Sony FE 70-200 2.8 Gmaster again which costs crazy expensive 3.000 $/€ then the Fujinon is like a bargain for the great quality you get here!
