Santorini – One of the most beautiful places on earth!

Todays blogpost is about my travel to Santorini – Greece in July, 2013. Santorini is not only one of the most beautiful places on earth but also a great place for photography.

About Santorini

Santorini, pronounced [sandoˈrini], is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast of Greece’s mainland. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago which bears the same name and is the remnant of a volcanic caldera.  Santorini is part of the Thira regional unit an essentially what remains after an enormous volcanic eruption that destroyed the earliest settlements on a formerly single island, and created the current geological caldera.

Shooting photos in Santorini

If you plan to go there make shure you have your camera gear with you with lots of memory cards, Santorini is full of photohotspots, or better the complete island is a hotspot. Also make shure if you go there with your wife/girlfriend, that she has understanding that you will probably be shooting all the time 🙂 At this time i had the Nikon D600, a Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 and the Tamron 70-300mm with me, so all of these shots are made with these lenses, most of them with the excellent Tamron 24-70mm, which is not the lightest but delivers great IQ. Also make shure to have pol and nd filters with you. Down in the linklist you can find all the gear as well.

Where do i start?

The most known place in Santorini is Oia which is well known for its amazing sunset view. So this is a place where you definitely should go. Just be aware that its also the most expensive place in Santorini, when you go for dinner, coffee… and you are in a restaurant very near the ocean view, you will be charged only for the view extra. If you want to safe some money you could also take a hotel in a small village. I stayed in Akrotiri which is not far away from oia, and also has a beautiful beach.

You don´t have sandbeaches in Santorini but beautiful vulcano gravel and the ocean is very clean.

Also make shure to visit the old watchtower in akrotiri, great view up there, and the historical museum, excavation, on your way there you find some funny signs and its also worth just going for a walk there in akrotiri and for dinner.

Also make shure you visit the Red Beach, its not far away from Akrotiri, its not the most beautiful beach but worth a picture with its red volcano earth.

Oia is really worth coming there for a few times, there is so much to see, the beautiful architecture, all those artist stores, cafes, restaurants, churches, the well known white houses with the blue doors, just magical and pure eye candy

There are also a lot of street artists around, so keep your eyes open and your camera ready. When you take photos of the sunset make shure you also capture some nightshots.

Since there is so much to see and do you will probably not lay too much on the beach, so you could take one of the ship tours around the island, visit the volcano island, enjoy some great seafood and take some more photos of course 🙂

I really enjoyed my trip in Santorini, and i will definitely be coming back someday 🙂

Here is a Video i shot in Santorini with my smartphone + D600:
